Over the years Ive come to adopt a few supplements that have proven clinically worthy and will remain in my regimen for a long time if not forever. One of those happens to be green tea. Green tea has been used in medicine for thousands of years in China for its extraordinary health properties. Below are the most highlighted benefits for my reason of use that I want to share with you.
Green tea is loaded with polyphenols, like flavanoids and Catechins which are very potent antioxidants. As you may know many factors contribute to oxidative stress (pollution, smoking, sun, and poor diet) leading to the creation of byproducts commonly known as free radicals, which causes oxidative stress to proteins, membranes, and genes which in turn accelerates aging and membrane damage. We don’t want that, and by incorporating green tea daily we can put the breaks on free radicals and ensure better biomarkers of health.
Green tea has a direct correlation with improvement in insulin sensitivity and glucose disposing agents, mostly having to due with glut4, The transfer of glucose into skeletal muscle. That’s what we all want right? The improvement in insulin sensitivity and quicker clearance of glucose from the bloodstream allows your body to have a greater advantage storing carbohydrates as glycogen instead of adipose tissue. A double win in my book.
The rare, yet highly potent and calming amino acid L-theanine is abundant within the leaves of green tea and its extract. L-theanine crosses the blood brain barrier and increases Gaba(the calming neurotransmitter) while also increasing dopamine(the highly focused and excitatory neurotransmitter) for a very relaxed type of focus and euphoria that’ll allow you to sit still and keep focus for hours without the drawbacks of jitters induced by coffee and caffeine. I love some green tea extract, or even L-theanine pre workout, excellent for a little bit of euphoria and motivation to reach some prs.
Fat loss furnace
We’ve already talked about green tea directly improving glucose metabolism and improving insulin sensitivity, but green tea also has a major fat burning effect by sparing muscle glycogen and increasing the rate at which fatty acids are released into the bloodstream to be oxidized with exercise. Every time I’ve ever taken green tea for those last stubborn 5-10 pounds I’ve always reached that target weight much quicker then without it, it even helps with water retention tremendously. This is obviously in conjunction with a diet and training routine suited to your goals, but the bottom line: the stuff works!
Vibrant skin is a win
The mass amount of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents abundant in green tea making it a potent supplement for fresh, youthful skin. This is due mostly in part to the antioxidants scavenging free radicals and reducing aging. It’s even been demonstrated in trial studies using humans and animals to reverse sun damage.
As you can see the benefits touted by green tea have been proven to be nothing short of impressive. I’ve used green tea with much success and favor this supplement tremendously. I highly recommend using green tea extract, preferably 400-800mg. Trying to reach this amount sipping tea is going to be a bit of an inconvenience for you, but if you’re like me and still enjoy sipping green tea, I strongly recommend steeping the tea bag a lot longer or simply leaving in the cup until you’re finished drinking it for an added boost of polyphenols and antioxidants.
